AI – Generated Content

The use of Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing models to generate various output based on human input.

There are many examples of AI software that is capable of generating many different types of content. Examples include but not limited to, text, images, audio, and code.

We have all heard of a model called ChatGPT, let’s see how that works… (describe ChatGPT: what does it do, limitations of the software, who/when was it created)

Treat it as you would any other outside source when utilizing the software
Needs to be cited; outline format
Include penalties for failure to disclose citations, including academic dishonesty policy

AIGC has the ability to enhance education, it also runs the risk of being misused, not just in the classroom but in daily life as well
For example:

generation of Deepfakes (videos/images that appear real, but are not)
In what context is content that is generated be considered intellectual property?
Privacy concerns, especially due to tools needing access to data in order to function

What do we know about ChatGPT…

Developed by OpenAI, and was released in November 2022
Trained using a type of Machine Learning known as Natural Language Processing, which allows it to mimic human language (think of Siri on Apple products or Amazon’s Alexa); it also uses a type of learning known as Reinforcement Learning
Can be used in the generation of many types of output that can be useful in aiding the learning process of students, but must be aware of the limitations of the model and the types of answers it can and cannot produce

Let’s take a quick look at two different prompts and output examples from ChatGPT and from its sibling model also developed by OpenAI, InstructGPT, to get an idea of how the model responds to users:

USER: TELL ME ABOUT WHEN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS CAME TO THE US IN 2015

ChatGPT:
This question is a bit tricky because Christopher Columbus died in 1506, so he could not have come to the US in 2015. But let’s pretend for a moment that he did! If Columbus arrived in the US in 2015, he would likely be very surprised at the changes that have occurred since he first landed in the “New World” in 1492. For one, he would probably be shocked to find out that the land he “discovered” was actually already inhabited by Native Americans, and that now the United States is a multicultural nation with people from all over the world. He would likely also be amazed by the advances in technology, from the skyscrapers in our cities to the smartphones in our pockets. Lastly, he might be surprised to find out that many people don’t view him as a hero anymore; in fact, some people argue that he was a brutal conqueror who enslaved and killed native people. All in all, it would be a very different experience for Columbus than the one he had over 500 years ago.

Now you do not have to read it line by line, but take a look at the way the two models respond to the prompt and the language that is used to respond and note the differences
