By ignoring assumptions, it is easy to overlook misrepresentations, biases, and gaps in our work.
This effort involved a interdisciplinary approach involving creative coding, virtual reality and others.
During the process analysis and critical assessments made them consider that ‘while they appreciated that the technology allowed them to work in new and immersive ways, they recognized the racial bias embedded in many digital tools’. When developing or passively implementing characters, ‘Most either ignored or misrepresented people of color, and they became intent on building a “library” of better, more diverse options’.
Focusing on where and how social elements interact with materials and practices can help us recognize these occurrences.
