Friday, September 10, 3 PM EST: Racial Equity in STEM Education Program

National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) seeks to support bold, groundbreaking, and potentially transformative projects addressing systemic racism in STEM. The EHR Racial Equity in STEM Education Program Description is a funding opportunity explicit in a call for efforts towards research, knowledge and efforts that seek to promote racial equity and dismantle systemic racism; proposals will be led by, or developed & led in authentic partnership with Individuals & communities most impacted by the inequities caused by systemic racism. The voices, knowledge, & experiences of those impacted by enduring racial inequities should be at the center of submitted proposals through project leadership & research positions, conceptualization of the proposal, decision-making processes, interpretation & dissemination of evidence and research results. The Racial Equity in STEM Education Program Description, is open in the level of creativity that is welcomed from the PI community. Competitive proposals will be clear with respect to how the work advances racial equity and addresses systemic racism, as these constructs may have different meanings in different settings.

Narcrisha Norman, Division of Graduate Education, National Science Foundation

Dr. Narcrisha Norman is currently a Program Director (PD) in the Division of Graduate Education (DGE) in the Education and Human Resources Directorate (EHR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). At NSF, Dr. Norman contributes as a PD for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) within DGE, as lead for the EHR Racial Equity in STEM Education Program Description and as a working member of several initiatives that directly support the goals and objectives of the agency. Dr. Norman is at NSF on an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) appointment from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where she holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Engineering and Technology within the College of Aeronautics. Additionally, she contributes to the Applied Fluids & Thermal Engineering Laboratory (@FTERLab) at Howard University, supporting interdisciplinary research related to the studies of fundamental and applied problems in fluids mechanics and heat transfer. Dr. Norman holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Old Dominion University and both MS and BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Illinois University Carbondale with a minor in Black American Studies. Her research interests are in theoretical physics, aerodynamics, and Graduate student/Faculty education and development.

Bonnie Green, Division of Undergraduate Education, National Science Foundation

Bonnie A Green, Ph.D. (Lehigh, 2002) is an experimental psychologist who specializing in research in success, particularly as it relates to academic achievement in individuals coming from vulnerable or oppressed backgrounds. Through the application of cognitive development, psychometrics, and data science, Bon is seeking ways to improve educational access, achievement, and success for ALL students, Kindergarten through college. In addition to teaching and mentoring undergraduate research students, Bon is the co-author of Statistical Concepts for the Behavioral Sciences, 4/e and the lead author for Statistical Concepts: Assignments and Exercises for Students, and Measuring Humans: Fundamentals of Psychometrics in Selecting and Interpreting Tests. Bon Green is currently serving as a rotating program officer in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation and holds the rank of Professor of Psychology at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

Sandra Romano, National Science Foundation

Dr. Sandra Romano is a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation where she participates in managing the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP), the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) programs in the Division of Human Resource Development as well as the Racial Equity in STEM Education Program Description in the Directorate of Education and Human Resources. She has been Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics for seven years and a professor of Marine Biology for 19 years at the University of the Virgin Islands, the only HBCU in the Caribbean. As an Assistant Professor she investigated the molecular systematics of corals with the participation of numerous undergraduates. Involvement in STEM education programs for undergraduates lead her to focus her research on the implementation of evidence-based best practices in STEM education to increase participation of underrepresented groups in STEM. Dr. Romano has worked on the VI-EPSCoR team to lead the development of the Virgin Islands Institute for STEM Education Research and Practice, to develop and implement evidence-based best practices in teacher preparation and training, student learning, and workforce development in STEM fields through collaboration among STEM partners throughout the Territory. In 2012, Dr. Romano was selected as one of forty national Partnership for Undergraduate Life Science Education (PULSE) Leadership Fellows charged with stimulating department-level implementation, across the US, of the 2011 Vision and Change Report recommendations for transforming life sciences education. Dr. Romano completed her graduate work at the University of Hawaii as well as post-docs at the National Museum of Natural History and the University of Guam.

Friday, October 1, 3 PM EST: Multifaceted, Transformative Geoscience: NSF Support for the Interconnectivity of Research, Research Infrastructure, People, and Societal Resilience

We invite you to participate actively in a discussion about the NSF Directorate for Geosciences’ commitment to creating connections and support for transformative geoscience. The presentation and discussion will focus on NSF’s stewardship of public funding for geoscience research, research infrastructure, and people (who shape research and education). We will highlight various programs from around the Directorate that support discovery in a wide range of geoscience topics and the development of and access to research facilities and the wealth of data they produce. Furthermore, we will discuss how NSF invests in people and communities, the structures to address shared societal challenges, and the meaningful way in which people of diverse backgrounds have shaped geoscience research. Let us learn together and build a multifaceted geoscience knowledgebase and community!

Madeline Midyette Mann, Program Analyst, Directorate of Geosciences, National Science Foundation

Madeline received her B.A. (2018) in History and Anthropology from East Carolina University and a M.A. (2020) in Anthropology from George Mason University. Madeline onboarded at the National Science Foundation in 2019 as a Pathway Program Student, in the Directorate for Geosciences’ Office of the Assistant Director. Upon completion of her degree program, Madeline worked full time as a Program Assistant. In 2020, she converted to a Program Analyst. Currently, she supports various GEO programs that focus on education, and multiple cross-directorate programs. She also co-leads the Directorate for Geosciences B A JEDI (Belonging, Accessibility, Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) initiative. Prior to coming to NSF, Madeline’s research focused on paleodemographic reconstructions of Middle (300 B.C. – A.D. 800) and Late Woodland (A.D. 800 – 1650) populations in Eastern North Carolina.

Lina C. Patino, Acting Deputy Assistant Director, Directorate of Geosciences, National Science Foundation

Lina, originally from Colombia, received her B.S. (1990), M.S. (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in Geological Sciences from Rutgers University. Prior to her current position, Lina was a Senior Program Director in the Office of the Assistant Director for Geosciences, overseeing a portfolio that includes education and diversity, international activities, and innovation. Most of Lina’s tenure at NSF has been in the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR, 2005 to 2020) where she was Division Director (2018-2020), Section Head (2017-2018) and Program Director. From 2006 to 2017, Lina managed the Education and Human Resources Program in EAR; focusing on fostering workforce development for Earth Sciences through Research Experience for Undergraduates and Postdoctoral Fellowship programs. In 2015, Lina held a detail position in the Office of International Science and Engineering where she worked with the science funding agencies from South America and the Caribbean, including Cuba, fostering scientific collaborations. Prior to coming to NSF, Lina was an associate professor at Michigan State University where she conducted research in the origin and evolution of volcanic rocks from Central America.

Mangala Sharma, Program Director, Space Weather Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, National Science Foundation

Dr. Mangala Sharma is Program Director for Space Weather at the U.S. National Science Foundation. She has been at NSF since 2014 and was previously the agency lead for spectrum management (ensuring the availability of radio spectrum for scientific purposes) and the lead for NSF partnerships with Nordic, Asian and African countries. Before coming to NSF, she was the point of contact for space weather matters at the U.S. Department of State and organized the first-ever global ministerial meeting on cooperation in space exploration. Dr. Sharma earned a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute for Astrophysics and was a postdoctoral fellow at Ohio University; her research used optical and x-ray telescopes to study galaxy clusters. She has taught astronomy at Ohio University and Pennsylvania State University, coordinated astronomy education and outreach nationwide as part of the NASA Astrophysics EPO Forum, and has long been engaged in STEM diversity issues.

Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Program Director, Physical Oceanography Division of Ocean Sciences, National Science Foundation

Dr. Arnoldo Valle-Levinson is Program Director for Physical Oceanography at the U.S. National Science Foundation. He has been at NSF since January 2021 on assignment from the University of Florida, where he is a Professor at the Civil and Coastal Engineering Department. He grew up in Mexico and his work deals mainly with the study of estuarine and coastal hydrodynamics. Arnoldo is a recipient of a CAREER award from the US National Science Foundation, a Fulbright Specialist Fellowship in Chile, a Gledden Fellowship from the University of Western Australia, a Fellowship from the Mexican Academy of Sciences, a Visiting Fellowship from the Chilean Science Foundation, Visiting Professorships from Utrecht University, Bordeaux University, University of Pernambuco and Kyushu University, and a Fulbright Senior Fellowship in Spain. He was named Corresponding Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. Arnoldo has worked extensively in several Latin-American countries, where he also teaches short courses. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and a fjord in Chile, Estero Arnoldo, is named in his honor.

Friday, November 5, 3 PM EST: National Science Foundation – Opportunities with HSI and IUSE

Program Officers from the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) will describe opportunities in the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) program and the IUSE: Hispanic Serving Institutions program. These programs have the shared goal of enhancing the quality of undergraduate STEM education at various levels. The presenters will describe the opportunities and requirements for submitting proposals in these programs, which have deadlines in January and February respectively.

Michael Davis, Division of Undergraduate Education, National Science Foundation

Mr. Michael (Mike) Davis has served in community colleges for the past 20 years. Mike has been a rotating program officer in the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) in the National Science Foundation’s Education and Human Resources directorate. He started his career at the City Colleges of Chicago, a district of seven independently accredited community colleges. For fifteen years he moved through roles as a faculty member, department chair, and administrator including Associate Vice Chancellor for STEM, and interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. During his time as an administrator, he worked to strengthen the district’s relationship with the Chicago Public Schools through greatly expanded early college programs, including the establishment of five early-college STEM schools. As a faculty member, Mike and his colleagues established a High-Altitude Ballooning program to create a unique undergraduate research program at CCC. In 2016 Mike left the City Colleges of Chicago to become the Academic Chair for Natural Science at St. Petersburg College (SPC) in Tarpon Springs, FL. Mike is an active science demonstrator and has been performing science shows for more than 100,000 people over the past 25 years. In 2006, he collaborated with science organizations across Chicago to kick off three years of free science programming starting with the construction of the World’s Largest Periodic Table of the Elements.

Mary Crowe, Division of Undergraduate Education, National Science Foundation

Dr. Mary Crowe has over 30 years of experience in higher education. Prior to arriving in August 2020 as a rotating program officer within the Division of Undergraduate Education she was a Professor of Biology and the Associate Provost of Experiential Learning at Florida Southern College. In that role she oversaw many of the college’s offerings of high impact practices such as undergraduate research, study abroad, as well as the Teaching Learning and Center and the Honor’s program. She was the president of the Council of Undergraduate Research in 2012. Dr. Crowe served as the director of campus-wide Offices of Undergraduate Research at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Xavier University of Louisiana. Prior to taking on administrative roles, Dr. Crowe was a faculty member who taught, advised, and mentored undergraduate students in her research on the behavior of burrowing animals such as dung beetles and fiddler crabs.

This talk will discuss an overview of the NSF/CISE Directorate funding opportunities. Details on different NSF funding mechanisms will also be covered. Attendees are free to ask questions to engage in an open dialogue.

Fay Cobb Payton, Computer and Network Systems, Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate, National Science Foundation

Dr. Fay Cobb Payton is a Program Director for Computer and Network Systems in the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate at the National Science Foundation. She is a Full Professor of Information Technology/Analytics at North Carolina State University. At the NSF, she works with Smart Health and Biomedical Research in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Data Science, CISE Minority Serving Institutions Research Expansion Program, NSF INCLUDES, ADVANCE, NSF Research Training Program, Excellence-In-Research for HBCUs, Broadening Participation in Computing Alliances and Computer Science for Undergraduate Education. She is on assignment from North Carolina State University, where she is a Professor of Information Technology/Analytics and named University Faculty Scholar. Her interests include data integrity, AI bias/ethics, healthcare IT, human computer interaction, women of color in leadership and tech innovation/entrepreneurship. She has authored over 100 scholarly manuscripts and conference proceedings. She holds a Ph.D. in information and decision systems from Case Western Reserve University with a specialty in health care innovation. Prior to her appointment at North Carolina State University, she worked at EY, IBM and Time Inc.

Friday, January 7, 3 PM EST: National Science Foundation – Opportunities with S-STEM and the Two Year College Program

Program Officers from the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) will describe opportunities in the Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM) and the Advancing Innovation and Impact in Undergraduate STEM Education at Two-Year Institutions of Higher Education Program Description. The S-STEM program has a solicitation to guide proposal submission. The Program Description, however, is more of an open call for submissions that will benefit undergraduate STEM education at community colleges. The presenters will describe the opportunities and requirements for submitting proposals in these programs, which have deadlines in March and May respectively.

Michael Ferrara is a permanent program director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation. He earned his PhD in mathematics from Emory University in 2005 and prior to coming to the NSF was most recently a professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver from 2009 – 2020. Dr. Ferrara maintains active research programs in extremal combinatorics and undergraduate STEM education. He currently serves as co-lead on the NSF S-STEM and HSI programs in addition to his work with IUSE and the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program.

Friday, February 4, 3 PM EST: National Science Foundation’s Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate at Hispanic Serving Institutions

The National Science Foundation (NSF) program directors who manage the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program will facilitate an interactive session about AGEP Alliances at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). After an overview of the AGEP program, participants will hear from AGEP Alliance awardees working collaboratively on three teams: The Hispanic AGEP Alliance, the California HSI Alliance and the California State University AGEP Alliance for Diversity and Strengths of STEM Faculty. There will be plenty of time for participant discussions and questions with the AGEP Alliance awardees and the NSF AGEP program directors.

Mamta Rawat has served as Program Director at NSF since 2016. She has been involved in PMB, Integrative Ecological Physiology (IEP), and Symbiosis, Infection, and Immunity (SII), and Plant Biotic Interactions (PBI) programs in the IOS Division, and, also, cross-directorate programs, such as the Understanding Rules of Life Microbiome programs and Signals in the Soil. Dr. Rawat is a microbiologist/biochemist and has a PhD from Louisiana State University in plant biochemistry and physiology. Her research interests lie in bacterial physiology and biochemistry, with specific focus on stress responses of phototrophic and pathogenic bacteria.

Kathryn Dickson, Program Director Physiological Mechanisms and Biomechanics (PMB) Program, Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS), National Science Foundation

Kathy Dickson has served as a Program Director at NSF for the past four years. Before that, she was a professor of Biological Science at California State University Fullerton for 30 years, where she served as department chair for five years. She has a PhD in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. She is a comparative physiologist/biochemist with research interests in the ontogeny and evolution of regional endothermy in fishes such as tunas and lamnid sharks, and functional morphology of fishes. At NSF, in addition to the PMB Program, she is or has been involved with the NSF Research Traineeship, NSF-Simons Foundation MathBioSys Centers, and BIO Rules of Life Programs.

MARTHA DESMOND, NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY

Dr. Martha Desmond is a Regents Professor at NMSU in the Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Ecology. She received her BA in Environmental Studies from Wells College and MS and Ph.D. In wildlife ecology from the University of Nebraska where she studied burrowing owl population ecology. She completed an NSF International Postdoctoral Fellowship working with the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua and Texas A&M. Her avian ecology research focuses on birds in grassland and arid land systems as well as urban environments. While working in the border region, she became interested in educational programs for diverse communities. Educational programs that she has developed have mentored thousands of students locally and nationally across natural resource fields, working collaboratively with federal agencies on the development of diverse workforces.

DELIA VALLES-ROSALES, NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY

Dr. Delia Valles-Rosales is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at NMSU, where she received her Ph.D. She is originally from Mexico. Her research uses nature to inspire the development of innovative manufacturing processes, new processes of biomass utilization in the plastic industry, and models and algorithms for system optimization in agriculture, industry, and service areas. Dr. Valles-Rosales has been investigating various biomass resources as fibers to be coupled with polymers for fulfilling the need for new applications. Her research has studied the effect of materials and particle size on the mechanical properties represented by tensile, bending, impact resistance, and water absorption properties. Dr. Valles-Rosales is currently the NMSU Director of the Wheels of Change: A Consortium to Develop Champions in Agriculture in the Areas of Sustainable Energy and Natural Resource Management Program funded by USDA.
